Abstract The most aesthetic writers have found their refuge from history in the ideal of "art for art's sake".  How can we imagine, on the other hand, "taking our pen for a sword" (Victor Hugo)? What about a politics of writing? What forms should literary commitment take? These are all very general questions, which we will ask in a synthetic way to the history of French literature.
