Abstract

The Age of Enlightenment marked an essential turning point in the evolution of acting. This was primarily due to the attention paid to the visual and material aspects of theatre, not only in France but also more widely in Europe. Treatises on acting multiplied, elevating acting to the rank of a true art, comparable to literary creation. Endowed with a vast theoretical and practical background, the actor is no longer perceived as a mere performer of a text, but as the creator of a singular artistic production. This phenomenon continued in the 19th century in the context of the industrialisation of entertainment and the rise of theatrical stardom. The conference aims at examining the various ways in which the knowledge of actors was transmitted and circulated between France, Germany, England, Italy, Russia and Spain in the 18th and 19th centuries
