Abstract
The translation of poetry is reputed as a multifaceted textual activity, based as it is on the understanding, analysis and reproduction of the various semantic layers and rethorical strategies of the source text. At the same time, the rendering of a poem into a new language entails the re-creation of the “original” poetical act by figure known as the “translauthor”. Through a comparison of various Italian translations of Alfred Tennyson’s elegiac poem In Memoriam (1850), the greatest work in verse published by the Victorian Poet Laureate, the aim of this seminar is to prove the value, ambivalence and complexity of translating poetry.
