The literary ‘mouvance’ through translation: Laurent de Premierfait and the translation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron

Le livre des Cent nouvelles is the first French translation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron written by Laurent de Premierfait in 1414. The peculiarity of this translation lies in the fact that Laurent, translator of other Latin works of Boccaccio, did not know Italian, so he availed himself of the help of the monk Antonio d’Arezzo who translated the work from Italian to Latin and, later, Laurent translated it from Latin to French. In spite of the double translation, the work was done with great diligence and the result is not entirely unhappy, but, from a collation work, interesting textual discrepancies have emerged, mainly concerning the IX day.
