Abstract
The present seminar aims at providing a comprehensive introduction to variation sociolinguistic methodologies to young researchers interested in collecting data and analysing their corpora paying attention to contrastive language chance. The seminar will introduce and discuss the main concepts about sociolinguistics, language contact and its outcomes. Being practical in its nature, the seminar will concentrate on how to carry out a sociolinguistic fieldwork research, collect natural occurring data, explore linguistic variables as well as interpret its results. The case study of Italian migration to England will be used to exemplify the methodological applications for the students. The seminar will eventually enable doctoral students to carry out an accurate quantitative analysis of linguistic variation.
