Abstract
The men of science of the Age of Enlightenment and, especially in Spain, all those who led and participated in the many voyages of exploration and knowledge in the Americas and Spanish possessions in the South Sea, were overwhelmingly from the Navy and graduates of the new Sea Guard Academies. Trained primarily in the cartographic, geodetic, geographical and astronomical sciences, they seem to have learned and put into practice the thought of Immanuel Kant when he stated that “geography makes us free and citizens of the world.”
