Studies on comitative and instrumental markers in Romance languages generally confirm the “companion-metaphor” and the unidirectionality of the development from comitative to instrumental expressions. A survey of spoken varieties in Campania belies this development and shows the use of the preposition per to express the functional domain of concomitance.
