Starting from the title (and related considerations) of two essays by Giulia Lanciani and Giuseppe Tavani (who recently left us and who were united, as well as by the passion for philology and the civil commitment with which they understood their profession as teachers and scholars, even from being companions in life), will reflect on the condition (and image) of philological disciplines today and on the role they have had, have and could (and in my opinion should) have not only within a epistemologically sensible and grounded humanistic education but also in the educational system as a whole
