Abstract
How did the Roman Inquisition really work, beyond the black legend that has characterized its image since modern times? Who were the men who governed and favored it? Which institutional structures and social practices supported its repressive action? The book reconstructs the ordinary activity of the Holy Office with particular attention to the Italian peninsula, where an authentic “inquisitorial society” operated for a long time, made up not only of judges of faith, but also of consultants, lawyers, jailers and hundreds of other collaborators, men who, in exchange for broad privileges, allowed the tribunal to control the orthodoxy, morality and thought of the faithful up to the threshold of contemporaneity.
