In this conference, Raffaele Romanelli intends to discuss the historical meaning of the three words which are still inspiring the French Constitution as well as many Declaration of rights worldwide. According to Romanelli, their combination should be regarded as problematic. Indeed, the history of the last two centuries tells us about liberty without equality or equality without liberty. Needless to say, fraternity embodied a variety of different communities stemming from nationalism to social solidarity.
