La storia e lo sviluppo della letteratura inglese del Bangladesh sono strettamente legati alle vicissitudini politiche del subcontinente indiano. Alcuni dei principali eventi della regione: la divisione della presidenza del Bengala nel 1905 e la sua inversione nel 1911, la divisione del subcontinente nel 1947, il movimento linguistico del 1952 nel Pakistan orientale, l’indipendenza del Bangladesh nel 1971 e i cambiamenti economici che il paese ha subito negli anni ’90 hanno avuto un profondo impatto su questa tradizione letteraria. Sebbene il primo romanzo inglese del Bangladesh, intitolato Begum Rokeya Sultana’s Dream sia uscito nel 1905, è solo negli anni ’90 che questa categoria di letteratura ha guadagnato un certo slancio. Il secondo decennio del ventunesimo secolo ha visto la pubblicazione di alcune delle migliori opere di questa categoria, come The World in My Hands (2013) di K. Anis Ahmed, In the Light of What We Know (2014) di Zia Haider Rahman, Choudhury Babu Bangladesh di Numair Atif (2019) e così via, segnando ciò che Kaiser Haq, il più importante poeta del Bangladesh, scrivendo in lingua inglese, ha definito una “efflorescenza” per descrivere lo stato attuale della letteratura inglese del Bangladesh.
