The Mediterranean has always been a place of encounter or clash between peoples. Political alliances or antagonisms, intercultural relations, economic transactions and sharing of religious beliefs: everything happened and happens thanks to the movement of things and people. This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference, with the same title, in which scholars of various historical periods have tried to analyze, through the centuries, routes and paths, objectives and difficulties, expectations and idealizations of famous people, merchants, diplomats, women, soldiers and pilgrims. First-hand documents, travel reports, famous journeys and travel stories have offered the opportunity to trace themes and problems common to men of all ages and to those who study them.
