« The Use of Images in Italian as a Foreign Language Textbooks in France: An Analysis of Polysemic Images and Their Relationship with Text in Lower and Upper Secondary School Textbooks »
This research project aims to analyse the ways in which still images are used for educational purposes in Italian as a Foreign Language (IFL) textbook intended for students in cinquième (the third year of lower secondary education) and terminale (the final year of upper secondary education) in the French school system. The study focuses on images characterised by polysemic potential, with particular attention to the role of texts and learning tasks in encouraging a plurality of interpretations or, conversely, in reducing the polysemy of images. Methodologically, the research combines a quantitative-descriptive analysis, aimed at identifying the frequency of images and classifying them according to predefined categories, with a qualitative analysis designed to examine their polysemic potential and their relationship with the accompanying texts and learning tasks. The qualitative analysis will be based on an analytical grid developed drawing on theoretical approaches in visual semiotics and language teaching. The aim is to explore the relationship between the semantic potential of images and the textual elements accompanying them, considering the role of these elements in guiding interpretation within the textbooks under examination.
